Terms of Reference

Recipients of the IFCC Awards are selected by an ad hoc Awards Committee (AC) appointed by the Executive Board; the AC Chair has extensive knowledge of the IFCC and is a distinguished scientist in his/her own right. Members of the AC are drawn from different regions of the world. Nominations for the awards are invited from all members of National Societies federated to the IFCC at least 18 months before the award is to be made. National Societies or individual members of a Member Society may nominate. Details of the nomination procedure may be obtained from the IFCC office.

Awards

The Federation presents several awards to clinical chemists and other colleagues who work in the field of clinical chemistry, laboratory medicine, and clinical laboratory science. These awards are presented to recognize the outstanding achievements by these individuals; to make the scientific community and general public aware of their exceptional contributions to scientific research and development and the improvement of health care; and to stimulate and encourage other scientists to accelerate their efforts to contribute to the advancement of the field of clinical laboratory medicine and science.

The sponsors of these awards have made it possible for IFCC to honor these outstanding individuals. In addition, they have shown their strong commitment to the growth and advancement of the field. Their support can be viewed as an example of the true partnership that exists between our profession and the industry in attaining these goals.

Awards presented by the IFCC include the (1) IFCC Howard Morris Distinguished Clinical Chemist Award, (2) IFCC-Henry Wishinsky Award for Distinguished International Services, (3) IFCC Award for Distinguished Contributions in Education, (4) IFCC Award for Significant Contributions in Molecular Diagnostics, (5) IFCC Distinguished Award for Laboratory Medicine and Patient Care, (6) IFCC-Robert Shaffer Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Development of Standards for Use in Laboratory Medicine, (7) Contributions to Cardiovascular Diagnostics, (8) IFCC-Gérard Siest Young Scientist Award for Distinguished Contributions in Pharmacogenetics, (9) IFCC Distinguished Women Scientist Award For Contribution To In Vitro Diagnostics, and (10) IFCC Young Investigator Award. These awards are bestowed triennially at the International Congress of Clinical Chemistry or Regional Congresses.

 

IFCC-Howard Morris Distinguished Clinical Chemist Award (since 2020) IFCC Distinguished Clinical Chemist Award (1969-2017)

This award recognizes, honouring IFCC President Prof. Howard Morris, specifically an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the science of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine or the application of clinical chemistry to the understanding or solution of medical problems.

IFCC Distinguished Award for Contributions to Cardiovascular Diagnostics 

This award honours an individual who has undertaken remarkable scientific work with cardiac markers or immunodiagnostic applications to improve cardiac disease diagnosis. It has been presented for the first time on occasion of the WorldLab Congress to be held in Durban in 2017.

IFCC-Gérard Siest Young Scientist Award for Distinguished Contributions in Pharmacogenetics

This award recognizes an outstanding young investigator or young leader (under 40 years of age) for his/her contribution to advancing the scientific discipline of pharmacogenomics and Personalized/Precision Medicine and/or its impact on research, development, standardization, quality management, regulatory evaluation or utilization in therapy. This award has been presented for the first time in 2020.
