The article on alternative diagnosis of diabetes using finger nail clippings, by Mr Antoine Kishabongo (Catholic University of Bukavu, Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Prof. Joris Delanghe (Ghent University Hospital, Gent, Belgium), recently published in "Tropical Medicine and International Health" presents a new diagnostic technique used in Africa. A simple nitroblue tetrazolium-based test for measuring nail protein glycation in human fingernails was trialled as an alternative to expensive and invasive blood testing with encouraging results.
